    HeatherFeather's Note:

This is a colorful twist on the old favorite "Rice Krispy" treats. These go over well with children and are a big seller at bake sales. You may cut them into much smaller squares, if desired. We like them huge!

    Ingredients:

    Yield:

    squares

    Units: US | Metric

    • 80 large marshmallows (or 10 cups mini size)
    • 1/2-3/4 cup margarine (or unsalted butter)
    • 12 cups Rice Krispies
    • 3/4-1 cup miniature M&M's chocolate candies (not regular size!)
    • nonstick cooking spray

    Directions:

    1. 1
Measure out cereal into a huge bowl and set aside.
    2. 2
Melt margarine and marshmallows together in a large saucepan over low heat, stirring (do not let burn).
    3. 3
As soon as the mixture has melted together, pour over the cereal and mix well using two large spoons.
    4. 4
Let the cereal mixture cool down just a few seconds, then stir in 1/2 cup of the mini M&Ms candies, saving the remaining 1/2 cup for later.
    5. 5
Mix well; some of the M&Ms will melt and the cereal will turn chocolaty.
    6. 6
Immediately spread this mixture into a 9x13" baking pan that has been greased or sprayed with nonstick baking spray.
    7. 7
Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup M&Ms over the top, pressing if needed to make them stick to the top (using a large sheet of wax paper to press will keep your fingers from getting sticky).
    8. 8
      Allow to cool completely.
    9. 9
When cool, cut into 12 large pieces (or smaller pieces for more servings).
    10. 10
Note: regular M&Ms will not melt quickly enough, which is why I recommend the miniature.

Heather, I made these for a bake sale at my daughter's school, and they were so yummy! I did use the mini M&M's, but they didn't melt, strangely enough. But NO MATTER! They were still very colorful and they tasted great. I did cut them very large, ended up with 15 in one pan, and 20 in another. Kids should get their 25 cents worth, right? :) You said 1/2 to 1 cup of margarine, I used 3/4 cup of butter, and mini mallows. Melted them in the microwave, which is probably why the M&M's didn't melt. But they took 2 minutes, a stir, 1 minute, a stir, and then 15-30 seconds, till they were ready. Thanks for a great twist on an old favorite!

What a fabulous recipe! We all loved it, cleaned the pan in no time. Pretty to look at also. The only change I made was to use a non-stick pan and butter instead of margerine. A little tip that worked extremely well for me was to wet my hands and then press down the mixture. I'm submitting a photo in gratitude. Thanks again HeatherFeather for such a tasty treat!
